'Lovely': Aaron Lennon wowed by £70k-a-week Tottenham player's efforts in tonight's smash-and-grab win

Tottenham Hotspur have made it into the fourth round of the League Cup after turning things around late on against Coventry City.

Spurs were hoping to bounce back from their North London derby defeat and take a step further towards one of their most realistic chances of silverware this season.

However, for a while it looked like Tottenham were on course for another morale-sapping loss, this time to a Championship side.

In the 63rd minute, Norman Bassette whipped a cross in for Brandon Thomas-Asante at the near post, and it was a simple finish in the end.

Then, Djed Spence – who came on as a half-time sub for Destiny Udogie – equalised for Spurs in the 87th minute, pouncing onto a great Dejan Kulusevski delivery.

And in added time, with penalties looming, Tottenham completed their turnaround in style.

Brennan Johnson latched onto a superb through-ball and coolly lofted the ball over the Coventry keeper to put Spurs through.

Tottenham cult hero Aaron Lennon was among those to sing Johnson’s praises in wake of his winner.

Aaron Lennon hails ‘lovely’ Brennan Johnson winner for Tottenham at Coventry

Lennon loved what he saw from the £70,000-a-week forward, taking to X to laud his “lovely finish” in the “smash and grab” victory.

Amazing moment for Johnson as he wins it for Tottenham

Johnson hasn’t had the easiest of times at Spurs. Indeed, he seemingly deactivated his Instagram account in wake of the North London derby defeat.

Ange Postecoglou rallied round behind the Wales international ahead of the game (BBC Sport), expressing his dismay at how footballers get abuse on social media.

Johnson’s well-taken winner on Wednesday night is an amazing moment for him, a great answer to his critics, and hopefully he will now go from strength to strength.

When is the League Cup fourth-round draw?
