West Ham are unlikely to be cutting ties with Betway due to the company’s involvement in the Lucas Paqueta betting controversy.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the betting firm had a duty to report the irregular movements it came across on its platform in regard to the Paqueta situation.
The Brazil international was hit with six FA charges in May over alleged spot-fixing surrounding yellow cards received in four Premier League games.
An FA investigation was prompted after betting activity in Brazil on Paqueta receiving a yellow card in West Ham’s home game against Aston Villa last year, with Betway being the first company to sound the alarm about the volume of bets being placed on him.
The Sun reported on 26 July the East London club are now set to sever ties with their front-of-shirt sponsor next year following its role in the alleged banding scandal.
West Ham cutting ties with Betway ahead of gambling ban
But Borson insisted that is unlikely to be the reason for the partnership ending as he believes it’s probably down to the ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships coming into force in 2026.
“I don’t believe the story,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I don’t believe the reason they are cutting ties with Betway was because Betway fulfilled their duties from a betting perspective to disclose the movements that they saw.
“I think it’s likely that they were going to find a new sponsor anyway.
“We know that betting sponsors are going to be banned from the end of the 2025-26 season and clubs are going to have to find new partners.
“This was probably just good timing. Everybody is going to have to find different revenues away from betting quite quickly, so we’ll see about that.
“But I’m not sure what they could have done in terms of Paqueta.
“They have obligations to the wider industry and to the regulator to disclose those sorts of movements.”
