Keith Wyness: Man City to 'give in' to Everton in transfer battle

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed he expects Man City to “give in” and loan Kalvin Phillips to the Merseysiders.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted City will want a January sale, which is something Everton “can’t afford”.

Football Insider revealed on 27 July that Phillips is pushing to find a permanent move away from Man City this summer after falling out of favour under Pep Guardiola.

Both Everton and Aston Villa have been keeping an eye on the midfielder, but sources say a loan move would be the preferred option for both clubs.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham but failed to impress at the London Stadium.

Man City expected to agree Phillips loan deal

Wyness claimed City will be better off agreeing to a loan to “get his wages off the books” at the Etihad Stadium.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “If you’re Man City, you want to put him in the shop window and push to sell him in January if possible.

“Everton can’t afford it, so someone will have to make a decision and decide whose imperative is more important.

“Man City will look at their payroll and decide whether it make sense to have him on the bench.

“They may be better off getting the loan fees and getting his wages off the books.

“I think City will give in and get him off on loan.

“Those are the two competing thoughts at the two clubs right now.”
