Everton could sell star defender Jarrad Branthwaite before the transfer deadline to avoid suffering any potential cash-flow issues later this year.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it could be difficult for the Merseysiders to receive their asking price for the England international due to the lack of activity in this summer’s transfer market.
Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is currently on the lookout for a new takeover deal after The Friedkin Group recently ended talks following a period of exclusivity.
That has ramped up the speculation around some of their star players, with Branthwaite’s future once again under the spotlight.
Football Insider revealed on 28 July the Merseyside giants are confident of keeping the 22-year-old following the sales of Amadou Onana and Ben Godfrey.
Everton could be forced to sell players after takeover uncertainty
But Borson revealed it’s difficult to see what options Everton will have other than selling the likes of Branthwaite if they don’t find a new buyer.
He told Football Insider: “What will be interesting as we progress through August is what happens with Branthwaite and maybe Calvert-Lewin as well.
“But the more concerned they are about cash as we go past the transfer window, the more you will start to see potential transfers out that will bring in some cash and bridge the period that they are going to have over the autumn and winter.
“But we don’t know, there is a worst-case scenario for Everton if they can’t find a buyer because they will have some issues in the next few months.
“It’s difficult to see what the options are going to be other than selling the club or selling players because they are limited now from the way the balance sheet looks and the amount of debt that they have on there.
“If they suddenly decide to sell Branthwaite for £50million up front, that would change our perception of their cash-flow position, maybe it could be £60million or £70million.
“But we know this has been a particularly quiet transfer market, so there are not going to be that many buyers with substantial cash to buy even a player like Branthwaite.”
