‘Made me wince’: Gary Neville simply couldn’t believe what ‘wonderful’ Arsenal player did vs Aston Villa

If Arsenal lost the Premier League title race against Aston Villa last season, then they certainly made a considerable statement at Villa Park on Saturday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side had to suffer slightly early on in the second half, but they then oozed the energy of the title-winning team they’re aiming to be.

David Raya made a simply astonishing save to keep Arsenal level during a spell of Villa dominance.

And when Leandro Trossard entered the game for Gabriel Martinelli around about the hour mark, he then made the difference going forward.

A fantastic evening for the Gunners, and they owe a lot to their goalkeeper, who will be applauded into the night.

But in terms of Arsenal’s crucial performer, it’s hard to look past Trossard who once was again Arteta’s super sub.

In comparison to Martinelli, who was working incredibly hard himself, the 29-year-old adds so much composure and guile to proceedings – a player who looks like he’s been here before.

And although Trossard hasn’t won the Premier League, he could be vital to Arsenal’s chances of doing so.

Gary Neville left in awe of Leandro Trossard’s role in Thomas Partey’s goal

After scoring the goal to put Arsenal 1-0 up against Villa, pundit Gary Neville was arguably more impressed with Trossard’s role in Thomas Partey’s goal to make it 2-0.

Neville was commentating on the game for Sky Sports and was amazed by Trossard’s work prior to Partey’s strike – which arguably should have been saved by Emi Martinez.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper has often foiled his old club in the past, but it was the away team’s turn to gloat on this occasion.

Speaking about Trossard’s role in the goal, Neville said: “There is real celebration going on in this far corner, but this is absolutely beautiful.

“It made me wince as a right-back, the spin, the timing of Trossard is wonderful. It really is. He drives it across goal.”

It would be silly to write Martinelli off, even if this performance by Trossard will likely see him return to the starting eleven.

Martinelli can certainly contribute in a similar fashion to the Belgian off the bench – a healthy situation for Arteta.

That being said, perhaps Arsenal could still be tempted by one more attacking signing before Deadline Day next week.
