'Makes Sense' - Pundit reacts as Rangers look set to strike 1-in 1-out double deal before deadline

Rangers including Rabbi Matondo in a potential double-deal with Blackburn would make sense due to the inconsistent nature of his time in Glasgow, says Derek Ferguson.

Ewood Park boss John Eustace has confirmed the club’s interest in the Welsh winger [Lancashire Telegraph, 22 August] while Rovers midfielder Lewis Travis is thought have been shown round the Gers training facilities ahead of a possible move in the opposite direction.

The pair are therefore in line to be used as makeweights for each other if agreements can be reached [Scottish Sun, 23 August].

Ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson is a fan of Matondo’s quality but amid injuries and fluctuating form he can see why an exit would work at this stage.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “I think Matondo is always going to be a fringe player with Philippe Clement so if there’s a deal to be struck there with Matondo going the other way it makes sense.

“You look at Matondo in the team, there was high hopes but he’s never really had a run of games where he’s hit it off. Injury-wise as well he’s struggled a little bit.

“You can see there’s a good player in there and you can see why there would be interest from other clubs. He just needs to find the right club where he’s going to feel at home and play games of football.

Philippe Clement issues Rangers exit verdict after Ross County win

Matondo’s two goals in the 6-0 win over Ross County are a timely reminder of what he can do when on form, but the fact that it came in just his 23rd start from 64 Rangers appearances shows he has been in and out of the side for two-plus years.

Philippe Clement told Sky Sports after the game (24 August) “I think he will stay” but indicated it requires a club to make a sufficient offer to change that.

He had been unable to comment specifically on the 23-year-old’s chances of leaving amid links to Leeds United just over a week ago but stressed he is still needing to sell to bring new signings in [via Joshua Barrie, 16 August], so if a suitable exit materialises in the final days that facilitates a new arrival the trigger could be pulled on a departure.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been left shocked by a “crazy” transfer situation after the Light Blues secured a key signing.
