Liverpool have “no chance” of securing a deal to sign Malo Gusto from Chelsea given his importance in Enzo Maresca’s side so far this season.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted that the 21-year-old remains a key player despite Reece James’ presence in the Chelsea squad given his inconsistent fitness.
James’ injury record means the Blues are keen to keep their strength in depth in his position, while Gusto has been allowed to prove his worth.
The France Under-21 international has made 13 Premier League appearances so far this season as Chelsea have emerged as surprise title challengers.
As a result of their lofty league position, Robinson says they would be reluctant to sell any key players to a direct title rival.
Uncertainty over the right-back’s future, whose contract at Anfield is set to expire at the end of the year, has forced the club to consider alternative options.
Chelsea unlikely to entertain Liverpool offers for Malo Gusto
There is a belief at Anfield that they would be able to offer Gusto regular first-team football which may not be available at Chelsea when James returns from injury given his stature at Stamford Bridge.
However, Robinson has now insisted that the deal for the right-back would be “very, very difficult” for the Reds to pull off given his role in the Chelsea team so far this season.
“No chance,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s been playing a lot for Chelsea with the injuries Reece James has had.
“There’s a lot of players who have played with James who will tell you he’s one of the best full-backs they’ve played with, but his injury record…
“You look at what Chelsea are carrying now and what their model is, we ridiculed the amount of players they have, but with a win at the weekend they could go top of the Premier League.
“Malo Gusto has been a key part of that and Chelsea will not want to sell an important player to a title rival.
“I think that would be a very, very difficult deal for Liverpool to do.”
