Man City are being accused of “corruption” after Watford saw a goal disallowed in controversial circumstances during their Carabao Cup clash.
Tom Cleverley’s side fought hard but ultimately came up short, losing 2-1 at the Etihad with a late goal from Tom Ince after Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes’ strikes.
However, the Hornets saw an equalising goal from 21-year-old Kwadwo Baah disallowed in the first half after a foul in the buildup.
Replays of the incident showed his shoulder-to-shoulder challenge with Kaden Braithwaite, in what appeared to be more of a display of strength than a foul.
Many have compared the incident to similar challenges made by Erling Haaland, who is frequently praised for his upper body strength.
The speed of the referee’s decision to disallow the goal has raised new questions about refereeing standards, with fans left fuming by the replays emerging on social media.
Man City labelled “corrupt” after controversial refereeing call v Watford
Watford can perhaps rightly feel they were robbed of a result after the disallowed goal, which would have had them level at 1-1 in the first half.
Going into the game as massive underdogs against the Premier League champions away from home, Cleverley’s side put on an impressive display.
However, their efforts were overshadowed by the decision as fans have taken to social media to label City “corrupt”, and the decision “disgraceful”.
In other news, Man City have made a decision about recalling Kalvin Phillips from Ipswich.
