Man City v Premier League: Stefan Borson reacts after punishment revealed

Manchester City have been handed a hefty fine by the Premier League because they breached the kick-off rules on numerous occasions.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the governing body has likely acted based on the number of times the rules have been broken rather than each case being treated as a serious breach.

The Premier League champions were fined £2.09million on 31 July for repeatedly coming out late both at the start of matches and after half-time.

Man City have accepted they breached the rules 22 times “without good reason” and Pep Guardiola has now vowed to conduct shorter team talks moving forward.

Borson believes the club have likely found it difficult to control Guardiola and his players in the changing room, leading to the hefty fine being handed out.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t think these fines are common because I don’t think teams break those sorts of rules 22 times.

“If you look at the agreed penalty, it shows how the fines rack up and double every time you breach it.

“These are pretty minor breaches in terms of individual breaches, it’s one minute or two minutes here and there.

“But 22 times is clearly significant and they clearly would have been warned numerous times, so I’m not sure how that happened.

“They are probably finding it difficult to control their players and manager.

“But it is quite a hefty fine, £2million is not an insignificant amount of money.

“It’s a bit of a funny one, it’s not a case of it being serious.

“I think it’s more about the repeated nature of it rather than the severity of the individual breaches.”
