Bruno Fernandes could create a financial issue for Man United if the club look to sell him, Tony Cascarino has suggested.
The Red Devils’ captain has come under fire after his sending off during the 2-0 defeat at Wolves on Boxing Day that marked another low point for many connected with the Old Trafford club.
That was his third red card of the season after previously being dismissed in the Premier League defeat to Tottenham and Europe League draw with Porto
It has also led to some questions about his future at the club, amid claims from the likes of Graeme Souness that the Portugal international has now become a “liability” (Daily Mail).
Cascarino though does not believe it will be easy for Man United to move Fernandes on even if they want to due to his contract situation.
Asked on talkSPORT about if the 30-year-old is “liability” who the club should be looking to move on, the former Chelsea and Aston Villa striker said: “I think he’s had a disappointing season this year, but if you look as his record.
“His goal record is one in three, he’s got a good number of assists, played a big part in the FA Cup final for Man United when they beat City. Ok he played a different role.
“It’s a tough one because he’s 30-years-old, and he’s signed a contract until 2027 so you’ve got another big issue with finance. Whoever comes in, that would be a brave call.”
Bruno Fernandes contract would be a problem is Man United aim to off-load
Football Insider Opinion
It would undoubtedly be a risk for any club who makes a potential move to sign Fernandes in the near future.
Given the contract he currently he has at Man United, the Old Trafford club do have the scope to demand a big fee for a high-profile player.
His wage is not going to be cheap for any club either, so there may be many potential suitors who are wary about a move here given the financial demands that could come with it.
Indeed, the issues Fernandes has had with discipline this season, combined with the fact that his age means he would not be the most long-term option, may mean clubs will not feel he is worth the risk.
That in turn could leave him on the books at Man United for some time to come yet, where he could still be taking a significant portion out of their wage budget.
If that is the case it could impact their other transfer plans which will be particularly frustrating for the club if his role is reduced due to issue such as these red cards or his age.
