Man United Insider shares new Eberechi Eze verdict

Man United must prioritise other positions before exploring a deal to sign Eberechi Eze, according to their former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected at the club, exclusively told Football Insider that Erik ten Hag’s side does not need a player like Eze at this time.

This comes after Brown previously told Football Insider that he expects the 26-year-old to leave Crystal Palace, but clubs will be unwilling to meet his release clause.

However, he has insisted United should not be his destination, as a box-to-box midfielder should be at the top of their list of priorities.

Brown insisted that, despite the presence of Casemiro and the arrival of Manuel Ugarte in the summer, Kobbie Mainoo is still in need of a consistent midfield partner.

Eze has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, while a number of top clubs are tracking his situation at Selhurst Park.

Palace have failed to win any of their opening seven league games so far this season, while the England international has found the net just once.

Brown, who also spent time as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two and has a wealth of experience in recruitment at the top level, insisted United must get their priorities in order.

However, he went on to explain that he would not be surprised to see the hierarchy make a move for Eze given his positive reputation – despite the fact they do not need a player like him.

“He’s a very talented player, there’s no doubt about that,” he told Football Insider.

“But is he what Manchester United need at the moment?

“I think they need some tradesmen. Players who are going to work hard and play box-to-box, stopping the other team from playing.

“Eze isn’t one of those. He’s an icing-on-the-cake type of player, and Man United don’t even have a cake!

“They’ve got to establish a solid place and then you can bring in these types of players to compliment that unit you’ve built.

“But knowing the way Man United have operated in recent years, they’ll see him as a player who can do something special and ignore what they actually need.

“If I was still there as the chief scout, would I be putting Eze up as an option at the moment? No.

“We’ve got players like Rashford and Garnacho who are going to bring similar things to the team.

“Then we’ve got Mainoo in the middle of the park, and he needs an experienced all-round player next to him, and we haven’t got that.

“There’s still a massive hole in midfield. They need a Roy Keane-type player in there, but unfortunately, there aren’t many of them about.”
