Wolves could invite both James Tomkins and Paul Dummett to train with the team as they weigh up deals to sign the free agents.
That is according to former Man United, Aston Villa and Tottenham scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the club are keen to bring in reinforcements amid a defensive crisis.
This comes shortly after Football Insider revealed that Wolves are interested in signing the two free agents as Gary O’Neil wants to strengthen their defence.
The boss is keen on landing deals for experienced heads at the back to provide cover both at centre-back and left-back, but the club are strapped for cash.
Tomkins, 35, and Dummett, 33, are both available for free after leaving Crystal Palace and Newcastle respectively in the summer.
Wolves have shipped 21 goals in seven Premier League games so far this season, the most of any team, and want to find short-time fixes to plug the leak.
Following an injury to Yerson Mosquera sustained in their 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa which has ruled him out for the rest of the season, they have been caught short at the back.
Wolves could bring James Tomkins and Paul Dummett in on trial
Wolves’ financial situation has also heavily limited their activity in the transfer market amid fears of suffering punishment for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in player recruitment at the highest level, insisted that the situation must be “worrying” if they are turning to Tomkins and Dummett to help save their season.
“Yeah I can see them going after both of those players,” he told Football Insider.
“They do need options and I’ve heard that’s something the manager has targeted.
“But I’m surprised they’ve not got them in already to take part in some training sessions so they can assess their fitness levels.
“That’s the next stage, I’d expect, if they do decide they need more bodies.
“It is worrying, though, if they’re going after players who weren’t deemed good enough in the hope they can get them out of jail.
“I have to admit I was never convinced about Dummett, for instance.
“But desperate times call for desperate measures and you have to bite the bullet.”
In other news, two big-name managers are keen to take over from O’Neil.
