Manchester United have finally agreed a deal to sell Jadon Sancho after he emerged as a shock target for Premier League rivals Chelsea.

United spent £73m to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 but the winger underwhelmed at Old Trafford.

After two largely ineffective campaigns at United and a bust-up with manager Erik ten Hag, Sancho was sent back to Dortmund on loan last season and seemed to rediscover his form at the Bundesliga club, playing in June’s Champions League final.

Ten Hag claimed last month that he had put his ongoing spat with Sancho to one side and was ready to reintegrate the 24-year-old into his first-team squad ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

But that was difficult to believe after Sancho was left out of United’s squad for their opening two games of the new season.

Despite his torrid time in Manchester, Sancho attracted interest from fellow Premier League club Chelsea, who were keen to secure his signature in exchange for Raheem Sterling, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by new Stamford Bridge boss Enzo Maresca.

Sterling was ready to accept an offer to join Manchester United, which would have boosted Chelsea’s chances of signing Sancho, but the Red Devils have now agreed a deal with another club.

United struck an agreement with Serie A giants Juventus on Wednesday over a deal for Sancho which will see him join on loan this season before completing a permanent move next summer, according to RMC Sport.

The deal will see Sancho play under Thiago Motta at Juventus, who are currently top of Serie A after two games. Juve have long been linked with a move for the United star.

Many Chelsea fans reacted with surprise at the prospect of Sancho moving to Stamford Bridge but former star John Obi Mikel endorsed the deal.

Obi Mikel – who won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League during his spell at Chelsea – said on his podcast: ‘If we can get him through the door at Chelsea, I’d be very, very happy.

‘He’s a fantastic player. I think on that side of the pitch, we’re very strong. But listen, if we can get a player like Jadon, of course, you’d be happy to have him. If that happens, I’d be very happy.’

Ten Hag, meanwhile, said Sancho would have to ‘compete’ for his place in the team after omitting him from his matchday squad to face Brighton on Saturday.

Asked why Sancho did not even make the bench, he told TNT Sports before the game: ‘He’s here [at the stadium], but I had a choice to make.

‘We had some issues, we need a full squad. He’s one of them. He has to compete in his position.

‘Game-by-game we will have a look. We need two players in every position because it is a long season.’

Sancho looks set to finish his Manchester United career on 83 appearances and 12 goals.
