Philippe Clement needs to axe James Tavernier from the Rangers side if he wants to save his job, according to Mark Guidi.
Guidi admitted “huge” question marks have been left by the captain after the 2-1 League Cup semi-final win against Motherwell on 3 November, with his performance leaving much to be desired.
It was suggested that much of the criticism towards him has been unfair, but it may be time for Clement to drop him in favour of Dujon Sterling.
“Again, huge question marks over the captain, James Tavernier, whose performance on Wednesday night at Pittodrie, his press conference on Friday, thought it left a lot to be desired and then, yesterday”, Guidi said on The Go Radio Football Show (4 November).
“[For] the Rangers fans, he’s always been a target, whipping boy, I think it’s been really unfair.
“However, I think now the manager, to give himself a better chance of saving his own job and to have success, needs to find a new right-back. Well, that’s Sterling, just put him in there.
“I just think for James Tavernier’s sake and for Rangers’ sake, I think the game’s up.”
Philippe Clement to save his Rangers job?
No one needs any reminding of Tavernier’s contributions to the club over the last decade, but it is hard to deny that he has been far from his best this season.
The Englishman has started all but one of Rangers’ 17 games this season despite his poor form and this is not doing anyone any favours.
By continuing to put Tavernier in the first XI, Clement is hurting his chances of saving his job at Ibrox, while also flushing the player’s confidence down the toilet.
The Gers are certainly not short of options at right-back, with Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo raring to go.
Like Guidi said, the Belgian needs to give Sterling or Kasanwirjo a run of games at right-back and perhaps allow Tavernier to work his way back into the team.
A trip to Olympiacos awaits the Ibrox outfit on Thursday (7 November) and it remains to be seen if Clement will make the decision to axe the 33-year-old this time.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton once again took a swipe at Clement after what happened in the League Cup semi-final between Celtic and Aberdeen.
