Rangers defender James Tavernier has been slammed by Roger Hannah for his performance against Motherwell on 3 November.
Gers managed to come from a goal down to beat Motherwell 2-1 in the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday to set up a date with rivals Celtic in the final.
However, the 33-year-old had a bad performance for the Ibrox outfit and was eventually taken off by Philippe Clement.
Hannah, the Scottish Sun journalist told Clyde One Super Scoreboard on 4 November at 15:54: “If you take the Tavernier point, Andy and I have said on this show many, many times, if you list Rangers’ problems, James Tavernier was not near the top of that list.
“But yesterday, take the game in isolation, Philippe Clement was correct to take him off. I would say yesterday was as bad as I’ve seen James Tavernier play for Rangers. Everyone’s allowed a bad game from time to time. Yesterday, he was dreadful.
“The manager recognised he was dreadful and took him off. Dujon Sterling came on and improved the team.”
Rangers must drop James Tavernier for the next few games
Tavernier’s subpar performance against Motherwell highlights a pressing need for a change, particularly in the right-back position.
Clement’s decision to take the 33-year-old off was not only justified by the immediate need to improve the team’s dynamics but also signals a broader strategy that might benefit the club in the long run.
By giving opportunities to Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo, the Belgian could assess their capabilities in competitive scenarios, potentially unearthing a more reliable option or at least providing Tavernier with the competition necessary to elevate his game.
This move would not only rejuvenate the squad by injecting fresh energy but also relieve the English from the constant scrutiny and pressure, allowing him to reset and potentially return with renewed vigour.
Moreover, it will also give Clement the chance to rotate his squad, ensuring that his players remain sharp and reducing the risk of burnout or injury.
Gers are already not in the best shape on or off the pitch and the last thing they need is for another injury crisis to occur.
