England fans hit out at Lee Carsley after he named Trent Alexander-Arnold as a left-back in the UEFA Nations League clash with Finland.
Carsley’s side cruised to a 3-1 win away from home, with goals from Jack Grealish and Declan Rice coming either side of the Liverpool star’s strike, while Arttu Hoskonen pulled one back late on.
It was the full-back who provided the best goal of the game – but being forced to play in an unfamiliar role led to plenty of frustration from the fans.
That anger was aimed both towards the boss and the 26-year-old, with Alexander-Arnold’s long-range strike helping to distract from what was a mixed display.
A couple of errors and misplaced passes had led to questions about his inclusion in the role, but the stick was mostly given to Carsley for his call ahead of the game.
Ultimately, swapping the full-back’s side was a more successful experiment than the striker-less formation he deployed against Greece – but questions remain about his future as the England boss.
England fans slam Lee Carsley after surprise Trent Alexander-Arnold twist
Carsley had seemed to distance himself from the full-time role after he admitted he was hopeful of returning to his job as the Under-21s boss.
Many fans had echoed his own call, with demands for a different manager to be brought in following the defeat to Greece, and those shouts emerged again after the Finland clash.
Taking to social media both ahead of and following the game, supporters questioned his decision to experiment with Alexander-Arnold, who had never previously played as a left-back.
Many, meanwhile, slammed the Liverpool man for his display with frustrations beginning to boil before he slammed home his impressive strike from range.
