Rangers shouldn’t sell Cyriel Dessers ahead of the transfer deadline unless they’re offered “ridiculous” money, according to Mark Guidi.

The Light Blues striker has been linked with a move away from Glasgow throughout the summer transfer window and Cagliari are understood to be considering a deadline-busting move for his signature [Soccernet, 11 August].

While some pundits have suggested the Gers should cash in on the forward, Sunday Mail football writer Guidi believes it doesn’t make financial sense for Philippe Clement’s side to sell the Nigerian for a fee in the region of £3.5million.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (12 August, 22:15) he said: “Kill any talk of Dessers leaving the club unless it’s ridiculous money.

“For me, selling Dessers for £3million, £3.5million doesn’t make sense. You’ve got to keep him now and what you’ve got to do is actually supplement that position.

“Bring in help for him as well, but keep Dessers. Absolutely keep him.”

Will Cyriel Dessers exit Rangers amid transfer rumours at Ibrox?

Clement has already admitted earlier this summer that no Gers player is untouchable other than Jack Butland, which would suggest that Dessers could be sold if the Light Blues’ valuation is met in the coming weeks.

But as Guidi suggests, selling the Nigerian makes next to no sense at this stage of the window, particularly when he is the only striker fit and available to start each and every week at this stage of the season.

Cyriel Dessers
Cyriel Dessers has scored 22 goals in all competitions during his first season at Rangers.

Should Dessers depart Glasgow, he will need to be replaced and as Rangers have learned this summer, 20-goal-a-season forwards tend to cost more than a pretty penny, particularly when there is a demand for their signature.

That is a stress that the Light Blues simply don’t need in the final weeks of the window. Unless a “ridiculous” offer is made, Rangers would be stupid to even consider it and even then, they would have a decision to make.
