Martin Samuel: Everton & Man City could be 'as good as relegated' or even banished from PL

Martin Samuels has insisted that Everton are one of the clubs who could be as good as relegated already from the Premier League this season.

The Times journalist shared that the Toffees, as well as Manchester City, Chelsea and Leicester all have threats over them, with “enormous sanctions” potentially on the cards.

In the most serious case, it has been suggested that banishment from the Premier League could be on the cards for the four clubs.

Manchester City are famously facing 115 charges that are finally set to be faced, with a third points deduction said to be on the cards for Everton too [Matt Hughes].

Writing for The Times on 15 August, Samuels did not hold back when looking at what could happen to Everton and others this season.

“Right now, before a ball has been kicked, Ipswich Town and Southampton, of the promoted clubs, could already be safe,” he wrote.

“It’s just that they don’t know it yet. How? Well, three from Manchester City, Chelsea, Leicester City and Everton could already be as good as relegated.

“All have that threat over them: the possibility of points deductions or worse, of enormous sanctions, perhaps even banishment.”

Everton and Manchester City face huge punishments

Just when you thought the worst had passed, things like this emerge out of nowhere.

There was a positive feeling around Goodison Park this summer with money spent on the likes of Iliman Ndiye, Tim Iroegbunam and Jake O’Brien, with Amadou Onana moving on.

Banishment from the Premier League sounds like an extreme suggestion at this stage, with no suggestions that anything like that could even happen.

Points deductions, as found out last season though, are a real possibility and Everton are in no position to fall foul of the regulations again given their previous two sanctions.

Getting the debt sorted behind the scenes would massively help out, and now John Textor has entered exclusivity over a takeover, hopefully, that is the first step towards that [David Ornstein].

Manchester City is the biggest case right now and that hearing is set to start in September [Sky Sports], and will take centre-stage over anything at Goodison Park.

Hopefully, things don’t escalate this far.
