Martin Zubimendi insists he is ‘happy and at peace’ with his decision to reject a move to Liverpool and stay at Real Sociedad during the transfer window.

The Spain international was one of the Reds’ key targets over the summer and they thought they were going to get their man as they agreed to meet his £51m release clause.

However, the midfielder rejected the advances from the Premier League and instead signed a new contract at Real Sociedad, the club he has been with since 2011.

The 25-year-old says he is very comfortable with the choice he made, despite Liverpool’s impressive start to the season which sees them sitting top of the Premier League table after six games.

‘My philosophy is to do at home at all times what comes from within,’ Zubimendi told Noticias De Gipuzkoa.

‘I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here and I am happy and at peace. Because of the press there is a lot of noise but in the end everything is easer than all that.

‘Of course I don’t regret it, I can’t think that after four or five games at the start of the season.

‘I made my decision from within, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don’t affect me. I see the potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I’m excited about having a good season.’

Zubimendi has already spoken on his decision earlier this month, expressing his loyalty to the club that gave him his professional start.

‘Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there,’ Zubimendi told Marca.

‘A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life.’

After the failed Zubimendi move it proved to be a very quiet transfer window for the Reds, with Federico Chiesa the only arrival over the summer.
