Celtic left-back Alex Valle should be given more opportunities after being the only positive in their 7-1 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (October 1).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie admitted he was impressed with the 20-year-old’s defensive aptitude and believes first-choice Greg Taylor, 26, is in need of a rest.

Signed on loan from Barcelona in the summer, Valle replaced Taylor at half-time with the Scottish champions already 5-1 down at Dortmund’s famous Signal Iduna Park.

Statistically, the Spaniard was one of Celtic’s best players on the night, completing 82 per cent of his passes, making three recoveries, and winning 100 per cent of his aerial duels.

Alex Valle needs more Celtic chances

The youngster has played just 151 minutes across all competitions for Celtic so far this season with his only start coming in their 5-2 League Cup win over Falkirk.

Taylor has been in fine form, providing three assists in the Scottish Premier League as the Glasgow giants look well on their way to securing a fourth consecutive title.

“I thought Valle had done alright when he came on”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“It was a difficult one for him to come into but he stopped the flow going into the right-back because every time it was out on the left they just kept switching it to the right winger and that’s where a lot of the goals came from.

“He stopped that happening because he was defending rather than going forward, stopping that happening meant they only got two in the second half.

“I think he’s got to come in for a place, he’s got to start and give Greg a break because he’s been playing every game.

“Give him a break and give this boy a run, that’s what I would do but that’s why I’m not a manager.”
