Rangers could be set to sanction a loan exit for Todd Cantwell ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline, according to Micahel Gannon.
The Englishman has handed in a transfer request to leave Ibrox this summer, with Philippe Clement confirming the midfielder’s desire to leave Scotland before the transfer window slams shut.
So far, it remains unclear where Cantwell could end up beyond the end of the week and Daily Record journalist Gannon believes a temporary exit may be confirmed if no permanent transfer can be secured.
Writing for the Daily Record on Monday (26 August) he said: “It’s hard to see a way back for Cantwell.
“A late loan deal is likely if a permanent move can’t be sorted.”
Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers before Ibrox transfer deadline?
As Gannon suggests, it does feel as though there is no way back for Cantwell in Glasgow even if Clement has repeatedly insisted that he will never close the door on the Englishman or any other player for that matter.
The fact that the 26-year-old isn’t even playing for the B Team, which Clement confirmed was the player’s decision, not his, suggests that he has absolutely no desire to turn things around, unlike Ianis Hagi [Rangers Review, 23 August].
In an ideal world, the Light Blues would find a permanent suitor who was willing to not only take on Cantwell’s wages but also pay a fee for his services, but time is quickly running out for that deal to be struck.
A loan deal would only be a temporary solution, but it would make some much-needed space on the Rangers wage bill which could be used to fund new incomings in the final days of the transfer window.
Hopefully, a move of some sort can be found sooner rather than later. The Gers simply cannot afford to head into September with Cantwell’s future unclear, otherwise, this will be a major distraction while the title race rumbles on.
