Dave King has failed to show how he will make Rangers sustainable if he is to become chairman once again, Michael Gannon has noted.
Daily Record journalist Gannon [17 September, 19:16], speaking on Record Sport’s Hotline, argued that King’s recent comments in looking to return as John Bennett’s replacement have not at any point mentioned what the Gers need most, a sustainable club.
He also referenced the idea that the contributions towards the Light Blues’ recent on-pitch successes such as the 2021 league title and the 2022 Europa League final were from a generosity that cannot be categorically relied upon.
Gannon said: “At no point in King’s comments lately has he mentioned a sustainable football club. He’s leaving it open to venture capitalists, investors from Saudi Arabia, America and around the globe. It’s all money, money, money.
“The club was heavily reliant on loans from generous fans during that time of success. That period of winning the title and getting to a European final cost a lot of individuals a lot of money – including his own, by the way – but that’s not a healthy way to run a football club.
“If King came back and said he had a vision on how to make Rangers more sustainable, you could say ‘you know what, we’ll sit down and talk about it’. But all this talk about investment from here, there and everywhere is not what the club need at this point. They need the next stage of planning that gets the club sustainable.”
Rangers skepticism out in force for Dave King
A CEO who has escaped to Saudi Arabia; a high turnover of players which still doesn’t seem high enough; home games at Hampden Park… and now health reasons forcing John Bennett from his post. We are five games into the league season.
In amongst concerns for sustainability, are issues regarding stability – there is nowhere near enough of a stable running at Rangers, and it is stagnating any kind of momentum the club want.
If King is to come back to his post at Ibrox and do things the same way, there has to be a Plan B to rein in the manner in how the club operates, to meet Gannon’s point about being self-sufficient and sustainable.
The tell-tale signs are already there of an erratic proposed immediate future under King – exactly the opposite of the atmosphere the club needs to work in right now. Rangers need to get their collective heads down and operate at smoothly as possible – that will yield success, not the candy-shop searches for overseas investment which could come off, and could also utterly nosedive.
The voices of disapproval and distrust are growing louder, creating another obstacle Rangers simply must deal with in the right way.
