Mohamed Salah is close to agreeing a deal to keep him at Liverpool beyond this season after the situation between player and club ‘changed completely,’ according to reports.

The 32-year-old has been in stunning form so far this campaign, scoring 13 goals in 15 Premier League games and adding two more in the Champions League.

The Egyptian is leading the Reds’ charge on both fronts, with Arne Slot’s side sitting top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

However, his current contract expires at the end of the season and the prolific forward has suggested that an exit is more likely than a new deal.

Speaking in late November, Salah said of the situation: ‘We are almost in December and I haven’t received an offer to stay at the club yet so I am probably more out than in.

‘I have been at the club for many years. There is no club like this but in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.’

However, Spanish publication Marca report that things have changed dramatically and now the Reds legend is close to putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The report states that the Liverpool board have been in talks with Salah and there is ‘total optimism’ that he will stay ‘for another season’.

With the forward free to enter negotiations with clubs from outside the Premier League from 1 January, there is hope that a deal can be agreed and confirmed before then.

Talks are also ongoing over the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who also see their current deals expire next summer.

The Reds are keen to keep hold of all three of their big-name players and avoid losing them on free transfers.

Slot has done his best not to be drawn on the futures of the three players, although clearly cannot deny their importance to his team.

‘It doesn’t worry me, we just accept the situation as it is. They play at a very good club and do very well at the moment,’ said the Dutchman last week.

‘I work with a lot of quality players over here and Mo is definitely one of them. He is one that should score goals. He is also part of the reason we keep as many clean sheets as we do.’
