Todd Cantwell has multiple clubs in England interested in signing him from Rangers this summer, according to the Scottish Sun.
On the paper’s website (22 July) it claims the controversial midfielder has a “host of suitors” south of the border, having also been offered to Lecce earlier this summer by the former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique.
The now-agent’s activities came to light when he accidentally sent a message to the wrong person over Cantwell’s availability, while there is said to also be interest in Saudi Arabia from James Bisgrove’s Al-Qadsiah [Scottish Sun, 3 July].
Cantwell, 26, is expected to leave this summer [Rangers Review, 3 July] having seemingly had a difficult relationship with Philippe Clement from the start.
Rangers to sell ex-Norwich man amid Philippe Clement difficulties
Cantwell demonstrated enough quality two seasons ago to convince some observers he is worth keeping this summer.
But Keith Jackson believes the “most talented attacking player” in the squad has no future at Ibrox for as long as Clement is manager, although the Belgian could yet leave to take his national team’s job [Daily Record, 22 July].
If it is a matter of one or the other leaving there would be a lot less upheaval to sell the midfielder so the more interest the better in terms of generating a decent fee.
But as with a number of players who could be moved on for the right price there is little Clement and Nils Koppen can do until the offers actually come in.
That finally seems to be in motion with the likes of James Tavernier [Daily Record, 19 July] and with Ianis Hagi [SportpeSure, 21 July], while Connor Goldson’s exit now appears to be on the cards too [This Is Mappa, 21 July].
But as with Scott Wright, widespread interest in Cantwell is only going to prove useful to the manager’s ends if money is put on the table.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues will have “plenty of scope” to make new signings with £75,000-a-week about to be cleared from the wage bill.
