Southampton manager Russell Martin is under increasing pressure amid the Saints’ poor start to the Premier League season.
The south coast side hasn’t taken very well to life back in the top flight after their Championship play-off final win in May.
Southampton are currently 19th in the Premier League table, having scored just four goals in seven outings so far.
The Saints have also shipped 15 goals in those seven games. Only bottom side Wolves have conceded more, with 21 in their ‘goals against’ column.
TalkSPORT presenter Jim White has shared what he has heard from the Southampton hierarchy with regards to Martin’s future.
Jim White says Southampton hope Russell Martin can turn things round
White, speaking on talkSPORT, says Southampton’s top brass haven’t lost faith in Martin yet.
The presenter says they plan give their manager more time at the helm, hoping he can turn things round.
“I mean, my information is that the top of the house is not ready to pull the trigger,” said White. “They have faith and trust in Russell. They haven’t lost that faith and trust in Russell – yet.
“The top of the house also told me that it’s hoped he finds the strength and resolve needed to do the right things.”
Vote of confidence
In the world of football, a vote of confidence from the board tends to be anything but.
In addition, hearing White say the Southampton board are hoping that Martin improves – as opposed to being optimistic – also suggests their patience may be wearing thin.
Life back in the Premier League is never easy just after promotion, so hopefully Martin can turn things round at St Mary’s Stadium.
What next for Southampton?
Southampton return to Premier League action on Saturday 19 October when they host Leicester City in a 3pm kick-off.
