Things are starting to happen for Liverpool in the transfer market after what turned out to be a quiet start to the summer for the Reds.
Arne Slot‘s side are yet to make a signing but over the past 48 hours, there has been a lot of chatter that work is being done behind the scenes in terms of potential incomings and outgoings.
Four Liverpool players have been linked with potential transfers as Fabio Carvalho, Sepp van den Berg, Bobby Clark and Ben Doak continue to attract interest from across Europe. Joe Gomez has been linked with a move to West Ham United as the Reds continue to field enquiries for a lot of their players.
However, if reports are to be believed, one of their transfer targets is in talks to sign for Napoli, with his agent currently in Italy to thrash out terms.
Napoli jump ahead of Liverpool in race to sign David Neres
David Neres has been linked with a move to Liverpool this month, but Napoli have made their move to sign the attacker.
The 27-year-old, who joined Benfica in 2022, is one of the fastest players in Europe according to The Speeds Database, having clocked a top speed of 22 mp/h in his career so far.
Fabrizio Romano says Neres’ agent is in talks with Napoli to work out the conditions of the deal, although the Serie A side are yet to submit an official offer to Benfica.
If Liverpool are keen on Neres, they’d be best advised to make their move now as the attacker is clearly attracting interest from elsewhere.
Do Liverpool really need a player of David Neres’ profile?
Neres predominantly played on the left flank for Benfica last season as he racked up five goals and ten assists across all competitions for the Portuguese giants.
Liverpool, for their part, are adequately stacked in this position, with the likes of Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all capable of playing in that position.
Neres is a versatile footballer and being a left-footed option, he’d add some variety to Liverpool’s attack, with Mohamed Salah the only left-footed option across the frontline currently.
While Neres is clearly an interesting player, looking at the grander picture, it doesn’t seem like Liverpool need a player of his skill set. That said, if he’s available for a good price and is willing to make the move to England, the Reds might see it as a good opportunity to bolster their ranks.
