Connor Barron is set for an eye-opening experience in his first Old Firm derby as a Rangers player, says Derek Ferguson.
The former Ibrox midfielder admits he is going to be a “nervous wreck” when the Light Blues travel to Parkhead straight out of the transfer window, with the Hoops looking strong so far this term.
Despite the departure of Matt O’Riley to Brighton he has highlighted Kyogo Furuhashi as a major threat as Philippe Clement looks for his first win against Brendan Rodgers.
“For me I get so uptight, I get nervous,” he said, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News.
“Of course I watched Rangers last Saturday [Ross County] and I enjoyed the game but then it kind of got spoilt a little bit because then I watched Celtic against St Mirren, and they were good Celtic.
“Celtic just look very strong in every aspect. Defensively that’s a group of players that have been playing for the last year or two and there looks a real good understanding.
“In the middle of the park you think O’Riley leaves and it’s going to weaken them but Bernardo comes in and just slots in there. They look very strong in there.
“And just the way they play up top their wide men are real dangerous in terms of the ammunition they provide. [Adam] Idah, he was okay at the weekend but you’ve got the other wee fella that comes on Kyogo, he’s dynamite that wee fella.
“I just worry because we go there and when you’ve not got your away supporters in that ground that is a hostile place, even from the moment you travel across the city towards Parkhead you feel it.
“When the boys step off that bus there’s going to be one or two, we talk about Barron, he’s watched enough of them, but he will get his eyes opened because it will take some of the boys by surprise.
“We needed that boost at the weekend big time for morale, to gain a little bit of belief and confidence, but we’re going up against a really good side at home so aye I’ll be a nervous wreck Sunday that’s for sure.”
Philippe Clement yet to beat Celtic at Rangers
Both squads have been through a number of changes in the final days of the transfer window with the Gers’ Scott Wright and Ben Davies both gone to Birmingham City, with the winger moving for £300,000 [Sky Sports, 29 August].
Todd Cantwell’s exit to Blackburn Rovers won’t have made a difference to the match-day squad after he was a controversial non-factor after putting in a transfer request.
Clement has said that one of his Deadline Day signings is in contention so fans might get a first sight of Neraysho Kasanwirjo, although the Belgian will have been disappointed that Samuel Edozie’s late loan from Southampton didn’t go through despite the winger being keen to join [Scottish Sun, 30 August].
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues may have banked a higher transfer fee for Cantwell’s controversial exit.
