Newcastle United will pursue a cut-price deal to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the centre-back’s price tag is set to drop in January as he will have just 18 months left on his Palace contract.
However, the Eagles are expected to keep their demand at a high price through fear of losing him mid-season, which could put interested clubs off of a winter deal.
The South London club had been demanding £75million to see the 23-year-old leave in the summer, and clubs will be unwilling to meet the same fee in January.
Next summer, though, sources say a number of Premier League clubs will be considering a swoop once he has just one year remaining on his deal.
Palace are also more likely to allow their club captain to leave if he does not sign a new contract before next summer’s transfer window to avoid losing him for free in 2026.
Football Insider revealed during the transfer window that he is unlikely to renew with Palace regardless of whether Eddie Howe’s side could agree a deal.
Newcastle United to return with new Marc Guehi offer
After long-winded negotiations which dragged on for weeks, Newcastle were unable to secure their top target in the January transfer window.
Multiple offers were rejected as Palace held out for their ultimate £75million price tag – a fee Newcastle never came close to meeting.
Crystal Palace part-owner Steve Parish spoke to Sky Sports (3 September) as he confessed he expected a deal to be reached with Newcastle before the sale of Joachim Andersen and Chadi Riad’s injury made it “impossible”.
The Magpies’ sporting director Paul Mitchell, meanwhile, insisted the club walked away from the deal as they will not be made to overpay for their top targets.
Palace have since secured the signings of Maxence Lacroix and Trevoh Chalobah, and Newcastle have now been tipped to return to the table in January.
Guehi, a 23-year-old England regular, is one of the prized assets at Selhurst Park, and Palace were always reluctant to see him leave after other key players departed.
However, as his contract continues to tick down, Newcastle are growing in confidence that a deal could be reached next year if he continues his impressive performances.
In other news, Newcastle are set to open contract talks with Anthony Gordon.
