Newcastle sources: Significant striker update tonight

Newcastle United are continuing to monitor Lille striker Jonathan David as a potential January transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 24-year-old is out of contract with the French outfit next summer, but the Magpies could make a swoop to sign him before that deal expires.

Football Insider revealed that the Magpies have made it a priority to sign a striker in the next two transfer windows due to their current injury problems.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson are both unavailable to Eddie Howe, which has led to him playing Anthony Gordon out of position.

The north east giants are considering turning their attention to David, but it’s open to debate if they can get a deal done mid-season.

Sources have told Football Insider that Lille wouldn’t be open to it unless Newcastle provides a big offer, and the Premier League side don’t want to spend £20million on him in January.

The Canada international has made a prolific start to the 2024-25 campaign, scoring eight goals in 13 matches across all competitions.

David scored the winner against Real Madrid in the Champions League and has been gaining plenty of attention due to his performances of late.

Newcastle are not the only club pursuing David at the moment, with several top teams across Europe watching him.

Football Insider revealed that Arsenal have been joined by Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus in the bid to sign the striker.

David will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs in the winter window as he will be a free agent next summer.
