'Nonsense': Gabby Agbonlahor says Euro 2024 star definitely won't join Arsenal

Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Arsenal have absolutely zero chance of signing one player this summer.

The Gunners are expected to make some key signings in the coming weeks. Riccardo Calafiori is on the verge of joining Arsenal, while Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Mikel Merino has emerged as Mikel Arteta’s next top target.

After addressing their defence and midfield, Arsenal are expected to make a move for a new attacker this summer, and many fans are hoping it will be a prolific striker.

Agbonlahor has now had his say on a centre-forward who has been absolutely brilliant over the last 12 months for club and country.

Gabriel Agbonlahor delivers verdict on potential Ollie Watkins to Arsenal transfer

Ollie Watkins has become a real star over the last year.

The Englishman had an unbelievable campaign under Unai Emery at Aston Villa in the 2023/24 season. He scored 27 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions and helped his side qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Watkins became a hero for England as well by scoring a late winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands that helped the Three Lions reach the final of Euro 2024.

Aston Villa will definitely not entertain any offers for Watkins this summer. He signed a new contract in October last year and has been tied down until the summer of 2028.

However, a suggestion was put in front of Agbonlahor on talkSPORT (July 23 2024, 4:14 pm) about Arsenal potentially signing Watkins in this summer’s transfer window.

The pundit acknowledged that the Englishman would thrive if he played ahead of someone like Martin Odegaard, but he dismissed any possibility of a move happening this summer.

Agbonlahor said: “Imagine Odegaard getting on the ball and finding those through balls that he makes, the service that he would get from Saka as well, that would be amazing.

“But, he is at a big club. He doesn’t want to go to Arsenal. He doesn’t want all that nonsense. He wants to stay at Aston Villa.”

Arsenal considering move for striker who outscored Watkins

Arsenal really could do with a new striker this summer.

The Gunners have Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz up top, while Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli have also played there.

However, none of the above are particularly prolific – they will not guarantee 20 or more goals a season.

Watkins, who scored 27 last term, is a good shout, but if reports are to be believed, the Gunners have set their sights on someone who scored 43 goals and provided 15 assists in the 2023/24 campaign.

Arsenal are planning to bid for Viktor Gyokeres this summer right after Eddie Nketiah finalises his move to Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille.

The Swede would be an incredible signing for the Gunners, and if he can directly contribute to even half as many goals as he did at Sporting Lisbon, Arsenal will become the favourites to win the Premier League title.
