'Not officially announced' - Wenham shares 'Unusual' contract twist about Tottenham target

Tottenham target Tyrick Mitchell might not be available on a free transfer as has been reported.

As reported by CaughtOffside (29 December), both Tottenham and Arsenal have held transfer talks with Crystal Palace ace Mitchell over a potential transfer, with the 25-year-old reportedly out of contract at the end of the season.

And while Daniel Levy has been urged to abandon this pursuit, a recent injury to Destiny Udogie, which could sideline him for up to six weeks, could make the signing of the left-back necessary.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has shed some light on Mitchell’s contractual situation at Selhurst Park which might complicate matters.

“Everything online says that Mitchell’s contract is up at the end of the season,” Wenham said.

“However, apparently Mitchell extended his deal by another three years at some point last year, although it was not officially announced. Therefore, I’m not quite sure what the situation is there.

“It is unusual to not know if he is available for free or not. However, I’d imagine if he was available for free, a lot of Premier League clubs would want him. He is homegrown, has lots of experience and ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of clubs.

“Therefore, I suppose this is one to watch as we await clarity on his contractual situation.”

Tottenham to sign Tyrick Mitchell from Crystal Palace?

Mitchell would be a useful addition to Ange Postecoglou’s squad in North London.

The Australian needs defensive reinforcements, as pressure mounts on the Australian, and Mitchell is a player with Premier League experience who could come in and do a job. However, if he isn’t out of contact at the end of the season, that could change things.

If the 25-year-old’s deal was expiring at the end of the season, he could be signed for a cut-price fee in January. However, if he still has years left to run on his deal, Palace might be reluctant to let him go.
