Tottenham sack: Ange Postecoglou desperately needs transfer to save job

Tottenham must sign a centre-back in the January transfer window to alleviate the pressure on Ange Postecoglou, according to the Daily Mirror.

The outlet reported on 1 January that with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero still out injured and Radu Dragusin’s fitness a worry, reinforcements in central defence are “desperately needed” for Spurs.

Dragusin and 18-year-old Archie Gray have been at the heart of a makeshift Lilywhites defence which has already shipped 28 goals this season, leading to uncertainly surrounding Postecoglou’s future.

An injury-hit, thrown-together defensive line has hardly had time to breathe amid a hectic schedule of matches over the festive period, and that’s not helped Postecoglou’s cause as he aims to avoid the sack.

The Australian’s high-octane style of football continues to see Spurs score bucket-loads at the right end but also leaves an inexperienced backline exposed when it comes to stopping attacks at the other.

As a result, it’s no surprise to see Postecoglou request reinforcements [The Times, 28 December], and given he’s already got the vote of confidence from Daniel Levy, it’s time for the board to hold up their side of the bargain.

Postecoglou can’t argue that no money has been spent on his squad – with £40million shelled out on Gray alone last summer – but that doesn’t mean the teenager is the answer in central defence.

Even with Van de Ven and Romero on their way back from lengthy absences, it certainly won’t hurt for Spurs to have another option or two to bolster a backline which is leaking goals left, right and centre.
