'Oh Blimey' - Sutton reveals which 'Outstanding' Everton ace 'Always worried' him until now

Chris Sutton has admitted to a complete U-turn on his opinion of Jordan Pickford after years of worrying about the Everton goalkeeper.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper has faced plenty of criticism over the years, making many mistakes in between the sticks, but he is now the first-choice ‘keeper for the Toffees and England.

With 73 caps for the Three Lions to his name, and a further 291 appearances at Goodison Park, fans and pundits are beginning to appreciate Pickford and Sutton looks to be one of those people.

Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast [18 November], Sutton said: “I always worried about him a few years ago, going ‘Oh blimey, he’s super emotional’ but everything you say about his shot-stopping, he’s outstanding with his feet – He’s as good as there is.”

Goalkeepers are often in the firing lines when mistakes occur, mainly because there is no hiding behind teammates, unlike all the other outfield positions.

Pickford will know that most of all after years of heavy criticism, but having become the number-one option at Goodison Park and within the England camp, he has deserved the respect of his peers.

Much of the criticism over the years has been deserved, and the goalkeeper will admit that, but he has become one of the most important figures in Sean Dyche’s team and has made the difference on multiple occasions.

The Toffees likely would have been relegated last season if it were not for the water-tight defence of Pickford, Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski, and he will be called upon again this term.

He kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League last season, only being bettered by Arsenal’s David Raya, and while this campaign has been much harder, he can still boast three clean sheets so far.
