Everton fans’ reaction to Sean Dyche bringing Ashley Young off the bench against Southampton, shocked the BBC’s Shamoon Hafez.
The journalist reported via X from Goodison Park on 17 September as boos rained down from the stands as the veteran full-back replaced Beto in the 62nd minute of the 1-1 Carabao Cup draw, which the Saints eventually won on penalties.
Supporters made their feelings known as the under-pressure manager turned to the oldest man in his squad, and seemingly knew what was coming as it was the 39-year-old who missed the decisive kick in the shoot out.
Hafez wrote: “Oh my. Very loud jeers as Sean Dyche sends on full-back Ashley Young in place of striker Beto.”
Jesper Lindstrom wastes Everton chances after Abdoulaye Doucouré goal
Off the back of four-straight Premier League defeats, including twice from being 2-0 up, Toffees fans would have at least been hoping for some encouragement in the cup even if advancing through the rounds isn’t the top priority this term.
Dyche made eight changes from the side which lost at Aston Villa, which he revealed was forced by illness and injury concerns, and plenty of Evertonians would have been glad of the rotation.
But few of the men who came in made a major case to keep their place in a scrappy game where the Saints had far more possession but weren’t great themselves.
Jake O’Brien wasn’t bad and there was a reasonable first start for Harrison Armstrong, but Beto struggled up front and Jesper Lindstrom wasted two huge opportunities to decide the game.
When the embattled Michael Keane proved to be the main reason why Southampton were kept out at the other end it won’t have come as a boost to fans who have been frustrated not to see O’Brien next to James Tarkowski in the league side.
Looked at in a positive an inexperienced side held out for 90 minutes and created chances which should have been put away, but only if expectations are low.
And it is little surprise that fans were so unimpressed to see Dyche take off a striker for Young when the full-back was lucky to escape conceding a penalty in the final minutes which may well have been caught if VAR had been in operation, and then missed the decisive kick.
When he was signed on a free following a solid season at Aston Villa there was a decent argument behind adding a seasoned veteran when there was little budget available, but the former Manchester United and Inter man has now had so many damaging contributions at key times it is a wonder the manager keeps turning to him.
It is already the second time he has done so this season after he was sent off in the opener against Brighton in the middle of an injury crisis at right-back, and he simply has to cut massive errors out.
In other Everton news, contract terms have emerged as a claim on why Dyche won’t resign from this situation was made.
