‘Opportunistic’: Arsenal are about to make a signing that goes against their transfer policy – journalist

There’s just over a week left of the summer transfer window, and Arsenal have still only made one signing.

Indeed, Riccardo Calafiori is the only major signing the Gunners have made this summer, but that could be about to change.

It has been reported for a while now that Arsenal are close to signing Mikel Merino, and it looks as though this deal will be done soon.

Speaking on The Mirror’s YouTube channel, Ryan Taylor has been discussing this transfer, and he’s shared some interesting insight.

According to Taylor, Merino is seen within Arsenal as an opportunistic signing that doesn’t necessarily fit into their usual transfer policy of signing younger players.

Mikel Merino breaks Arsenal’s transfer policy

Taylor shared what he knows about Merino.

“Merino would be free to speak with foreign clubs in January, meaning he could join another club on a free transfer next summer

“Arsenal are aware of that and they have been reluctant to put down huge cash becayse Merino is 28.

“Merino is seen as an opportunistic signing and a player that doesn’t really align with their current transfer policy.

“We are moving towards the white smoke on that one which is a relief to Arsenal fans, because it’s become a bit tedious. It’s clear Merino is probably going to join Arsenal.”

Merino signing could be brilliant

Mikel Merino doesn’t fit into Arsenal’s transfer policy of signing promising young players, but this isn’t the first time Arsenal have broken this policy.

The likes of Leandro Trossard and Jorginho didn’t necessarily fit into this transfer policy and both players have been fantastic since joining the Gunners.

Merino could be just what the doctor ordered at Arsenal, and, who knows? Perhaps this signing will be enough to propel Arsenal to the Premier League title this season.

This hasn’t been the busiest transfer window ever for Arsenal, but the club’s business could well be enough to take them to the next level.
