'Pass The Sick Bucket' - Keith Wyness: Chelsea have 'taken the mick out of fans' in cringe reveal

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Chelsea have “taken the mick” out of the fans following their kit reveal for next season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the press release for the strip was “rubbish” and wasn’t genuine.

Chelsea released a statement on 15 July confirming the launch of their new kit, adding that the design features a “distinctive melting pot pattern” and showcases the fans, players and city’s energy.

But the west Londoners are at risk of starting next season with no front-of-shirt sponsor for a second successive campaign after they have so far failed to reach an agreement.

Football Insider revealed on 10 July Chelsea could be missing out on bringing in an extra £50million a year by not having a shirt sponsor.

Chelsea could have launched new kit in different way

Wyness believes there are several different ways the club could have launched the new kit after reading through the press release.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Please, pass the sick bucket, it is a melange of words.

“It’s marketing hype that is rubbish. I just don’t accept that at all, that’s overhype. I really think that’s taking the mick out of football fans to really think that’s the case.

“I think they had a young copywriter, who has gone in there and tried to make a mark. I may be old, but I know what’s genuine and what’s not.

“I know in marketing you have got to be genuine to be able to bring the fans with you.

“I know a lot of Chelsea fans who were saying the exact same as me. They were absolutely laughing at that.

“They know what Chelsea stands for and this whole idea of a ‘Burning, melting pot’, I’m afraid it’s a football shirt.

“Chelsea have got great things that they stand for and history behind it, but it’s not that. There are different ways to do it.

“You could have perhaps launched it with a new record, a song or associate it with social media influencers or the right rock stars.

“Do it that way and get your message across that way.

“But don’t try and say the shirt represents something like that.”
