Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu became the first player to register eight goal attempts in a single Premier League game in Southampton’s 1-0 loss to West Ham on Thursday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Onuachu got the nod to start in coach Ivan Juric’s first game in charge of Southampton. Recall that the Nigerian striker has played a peripheral role at the St. Mary’s since he joined the club two years ago, but he has impressed the few times he has gotten starts, albeit he is yet to score.
Against West Ham on Thursday, Onuachu looked very sharp. He got a few looks but was unlucky not to score. Onuachu finished the game, but he could not help Southampton as it ended 1-0 after 90 minutes.
However, he had a record to show for all his efforts. According to Opta Joe, Onuachu registered eight shots on goal, the highest for any Premier League player this season.
There have been talks that the Nigerian striker could leave Southampton in January. But now that his game time has increased, he will be hoping that his minutes increase significantly in the coming weeks.
Southampton currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League, nine points away from safety. With Juric now in charge, they will be hoping to experience a significant turnaround before the end of the season.
