Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher have praised Everton for getting so much money of of Amadou Onana’s sale to Aston Villa earlier this summer.

The pair hosted the first fan debate of the new season on The Overlap (8 August. 25m 12s) and were amazed by the £50million price tag the Blues fetched for the Belgian midfielder.

Onana made 72 appearances during his two-year stint at Goodison Park and was sold to the Villans to ease the financial burden on the club imposed by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Scholes said: “I don’t really see the Onana thing. I didn’t see anything from him at Everton or Belgium either.

“When they said £50m for him I just thought ‘that’s a little bit too much’. [Unai] Emery, being the manager he is, might get something out of him. Where I’m stood now, £50m sounds like a lot of money.”

Carragher added: “I was never really impressed with him at Everton; he was alright for Belgium. It’ll be interesting to see if he can replace Douglas Luiz at Villa.”

Everton were right to sell Amadou Onana

The 22-year-old arrived at Goodison Park from LOSC Lille in 2022 with huge potential that he has so far, relatively speaking, failed to truly live up to in the Premier League.

He became an infamous figure at Everton following his controversial penalty miss against Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final in December, leading to the Toffees’ elimination from the competition.

At the same time, he was also a consistent presence in the engine room and just often did not seem suited to the manager’s system.

His sale generated £17m profit for the club at a time when it was desperately needed. Evert are in a stable financial position for now, but a takeover must be finalised soon to secure the long-term future of the club [talkSPORT, 6 August].

Onana featured 37 times for Everton across all competitions last season and registered three goals and one assist.

His performances for Belgium at Euro 2024 were mixed as Roberto Martinez’s side were lucky to reach the round of 16, where France eliminated the Belgians from the competition.

He continues to split opinions, with Robbie Fowler backing him to be a success at Villa Park. Either way, his loss won’t leave an irreplaceable hole at Goodison Park.

The club generated a healthy profit and now Sean Dyche can focus on landing his replacement, with Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips the likely man.

In other Everton news, Alan Myers has issued an update as the Toffees now want to sign a £25m-rated ‘Explosive’ central midfielder.
