Pep Guardiola has reiterated his commitment to Man City even if the club are relegated as a result of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League.
It was announced on Thursday that the 53-year-old has put pen to paper on a new contract at the Etihad Stadium, securing his future with the reigning Premier League champions until the end of the 2026/27 season.
A decision over those charges is expected to be made public at some point next year, meaning Guardiola will still be under contract when any potential punishment comes out, although the club deny wrongdoing.
He could therefore find himself in charge of a Man City side playing at a lower level, something that does not seem to daunt the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss.
When asked about the size of the commitment he was making to the club given the charges hanging over them in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s game with Tottenham (24 November), Guardiola replied: “I said that six months ago. You have in my interviews there I said the same. So not because now I extend the contract and then pretend to be oh how nice is Pep.
“I said six months ago, one year ago when I re-signed, when all the clubs accused us to have done something wrong, so what happens, you get relegated, I will be here.
“Next year we will come up to the, I don’t know the position of the conference they are to bring us. We’re going to come up and come up, we’re going to come back to the Premier League. I feel it then and I feel it now.”
Pep Guardiola defiance is a major boost for Man City
Football Insider Opinion
The fact that Guardiola has repeatedly confirmed he will be staying at The Etihad Stadium even in the event of relegation can only be seen as a huge positive for the Premier League champions.
It does not need to be said how good a manager the 53-year-old is, given his record already speaks for itself in that respect.
As a result, he would surely be the right man to lead Man City back to the top-flight if they were to be relegated as a result of these charges, even if the prospect of the Catalan in a lower division is almost impossible to imagine unless, or until, it happens.
His attitude here is a major boost, with Guardiola seemingly instilling a mindset of resilience around the club amid the challenges they are facing.
That ought to have a galvanising effect on everyone at the Etihad, giving them the belief and confidence they can recover from whatever situation they might find themselves in.
All of that surely means that this new contract for Guardiola will prove to be an excellent piece of business for Man City over the next couple of years.
