Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes’ £100million release clause has been removed from his contract, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that he is regarded as the most important player at St James’ Park and they are highly unlikely to entertain talks over his exit.

The Magpies would also risk heavy backlash from their fans if they were to let the idolised 27-year-old leave, and are keen to avoid that situation.

There had been suggestions that they may be forced to sell players before spending on reinforcements, but there are a number of players ahead in the queue in that situation.

This comes amid interest from Man City, who are keen to bolster their options in midfield to strengthen their title push in the second half of the season.

Football Insider revealed on 10 November that City have prioritised the signing of a central midfielder ahead of the January transfer window.

However, Newcastle are extremely reluctant to let their star man leave, especially mid-way through the season, and are expected to rebuff any advances.

Guimaraes’ contract at St James’ Park is set to run until 2028 after he signed an extension last year, and remains committed to the project under Eddie Howe.

He remains a crucial part of the team, appearing in all 14 of Newcastle’s games across all competitions this season and starting every league game.

The midfielder’s presence in the heart of the team is seen as vital to helping them achieve their goals of qualifying for European competitions come the end of the season.

Despite an inconsistent start, the Magpies are currently 8th in the league following an impressive 3-1 win away from home against high-flying Nottingham Forest.

Man City, meanwhile, have been dealt a heavy blow by the injury to Rodri and have struggled to find a balance in their midfield during his absence.

As a result, they are considering moves for a number of midfield talents to improve their side and help get their title defence back on track.

However, while Guimaraes has emerged on their list of targets, a deal for his signature is expected to be complicated given Newcastle’s reluctance to enter talks.
