‘Perfect for it’: Jamie Redknapp says £34m is great fit for new Liverpool role under Arne Slot

With no new signings this summer, Arne Slot is ready to experiment Liverpool players in new roles.

Jurgen Klopp left behind a good, albeit aging, Liverpool squad this summer for Arne Slot to inherit.

The Dutchman will have to work with what he has got as the Anfield chiefs have failed to back him with a single new signing this summer.

The one target the Reds did push hard for this summer was a new midfielder, but Liverpool were rejected by Martin Zubimendi despite being willing to meet his release clause at Real Sociedad.

The Spaniard would have joined to play in a defensive midfield position with doubts over Wataru Endo’s ability to play there for the whole season.

With the Zubimendi deal collapsed, Slot is now experimenting with a new player in the ‘No.6’ role, and Jamie Redknapp believes he’s perfect for it.

Arne Slot tries midfield experiment at Liverpool

For Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Ipswich Town, Slot played a midfield trio of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.

Despite Mac Allister’s experience playing as a deep midfielder at Brighton, it was Gravenberch who got the nod to play as the anchor in Liverpool’s midfield.

Slot did the same against Brentford on Sunday and the Dutchman, who joined Liverpool for £34million last summer, has impressed in his new role.

Ahead of kick-off on Sunday, Redknapp told Sky Sports, “He’s [Gravenberch] comfortable on the ball. It’s going to be a learning curve for him because it’s a very specialised position.

“It’s hard, because you’re receiving the ball with your back to play a lot of the time, you’re getting pressed.

“I think that’s why he wants him to play there, because he’s probably the most comfortable on the ball. It allows them to get Mac Allister and Szoboszlai further up the pitch in forward areas.

“The way he is and his stature, he should really be perfect for it. He’s good in the air, he’s comfortable on the ball, he can break lines with his dribbling and his passing.”

Ryan Gravenberch could save Liverpool millions

Liverpool overhauled their midfield last season and out of all their new arrivals, Gravenberch looked the least settled under Klopp.

He headed into the new season as somewhat of a forgotten man, but Slot has handed him a new role which he seems to suit well.

Liverpool were ready to spend £51million on Zubimendi, but Gravenberch’s impressive performances could now save the club millions and allow them to focus on improving other positions.
