‘Perfect response’: Troy Deeney says £40m Tottenham player finally turned up for Spurs in 3-1 Brentford win
"This was the perfect response" ????
Tottenham secured only their second win of the Premier League season this weekend with a 3-1 result against London rivals Brentford.
Having lost to Arsenal last week in the North London Derby, Spurs needed a win having started the new season off to a slog under Ange Postecoglou, who is now starting to face criticism from the likes of Chris Sutton for some of his more left-field comments.
Yet Tottenham gave the ideal response on Saturday with a good win against Brentford, with James Maddison the star of the show as Gary Lineker hailed the former Leicester City star as ‘brilliant’ against the Bees.
And Troy Deeney was also impressed with what he saw from the £40m Tottenham star.
James Maddison delivered ‘the perfect response’ in Tottenham win vs Brentford
Writing for BBC Sport, the former Watford captain praised the England international for his performance over the weekend, with Deeney noting that he’d been waiting for Maddison to turn up in a game like this for some time.
With Tim Sherwood suggesting Maddison was playing too safe for Tottenham, the former Leicester man showed first-hand what kind of player he can be when given the freedom to do what he wants, and Deeney was impressed with what he saw from the Spurs star.
The former Premier League striker wrote: “This is the game I’ve been waiting to see Madds do for a long, long time. Even though Brentford scored early he got in there and said: ‘Right, watch what I do’. He created loads of chances.
“I’ve been critical of him at times, I felt he has gone too short and not put himself in difficult positions. This was the perfect response.”
Tottenham will hope they can see Maddison at his best again
Apart from a few bright performances at the start of his Tottenham career, Maddison has cut a frustrating figure in the white half of north London since making the switch to Spurs last year.
However, Maddison showed against Brentford why he is rightly considered one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League and a player who can be a shining light for Tottenham this season.
And after such a good performance against the Bees, Spurs will be hopeful that Maddison can finally return to his best after a disappointing few months for the north London side.
