Everton could cause a “massive upset” over Chelsea when the two sides meet each other at Goodison Park on Sunday, according to Jermaine Beckford.
The former Toffees striker believes each of Sean Dyche’s players will put in extra effort against the Blues on 22 December as they look to impress the new ownership under The Friedkin Group.
He is aware that this is perhaps the worst time to lock horns with Enzo Maresca’s side, but mooted the possibility of an “underdog story” this weekend.
“What usually happens in this situation is every single player on the team will end up giving an extra 5, 10 or 15 per cent, which they didn’t realise they had”, Beckford said on BBC’s The Football News Show (20 December).
“Who knows, there might be a massive, massive upset [against Chelsea].
“I call it an upset against Chelsea because Chelsea are on a phenomenal run of form at the moment and I actually it’s possibly the worst time to play against them.
“But, that being said, I love an underdog story.”
The Friedkin Group to inspire Everton win v Chelsea?
There is an air of positivity around Goodison Park after Dan Friedkin completed the takeover of the Merseyside-based club this week.
It has brought an end to Farhad Moshiri’s long-running effort to sell, with the Toffees now in a better position to put their financial struggles behind them.
However, if that will be enough to inspire an upset over Chelsea, who could go atop the Premier League table with a win on Sunday at least momentarily, remains to be seen.
Dyche’s side have other reasons to be positive as well, having picked up four points in their last two league games.
Everton held Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium in their last outing on 14 December and will be hopeful of a earning a similar result at home against the Blues.
It is worth noting that Dyche and Co are just three points above the relegation zone, albeit with a game in hand.
In other Everton news, these European giants will only sign this Toffees ace on one condition.
