Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Nottingham Forest have shown they want to “play with the big boys” after the mega-money appointment of Edu Gaspar.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Brazillian could be a “great appointment” for the club and get them closer to the “top table” in the Premier League.
As revealed by Football Insider on Monday (4 November), Edu has agreed a triple-your-money deal with the group run by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis.
The transfer guru will become head of football operations for Marinakis to look after his three clubs – Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have started the season in incredible form and sit third in the Premier League, losing just one of their opening 10 top-flight games.
Edu could be ‘great’ for Nottingham Forest, says Wyness
Wyness insisted Edu could even “take the edge off” Marinakis’ spiky personality, which has got him into trouble in recent years.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This was the surprise, Edu heading to Marinakis.
“Certainly, some of the agents he’s close to are going to have a big say in what Forest do going forward.
“But this is Forest saying: We want to play with the big boys.
“Their league position is incredible, third in the table – it’s phenomenal.
“This is another step to establishing themselves in the league, with the links that Edu has to top agents and everyone around the world.
“His knowledge, his black book – he could be a great appointment for Forest.
“He may even help to take the edge off Marinakis and his personality. We all know he has got an edge.
“Edu can handle that. It’s good news for Forest and it puts them further towards the top table in the Premier League.”
