Philippe Clement has admitted Rangers will consider offers for James Tavernier and Connor Goldson if they arrive.
Speaking to Rangers Review (14 July), the boss was asked about the future of his captain and vice-captain this summer amid constant speculation they could leave Ibrox amid interest from Saudi Arabia and England [The Sun, 30 June].
While Clement claimed that a lot of those reports have been “fake news”, he admitted there is truth in the fact that Rangers will consider offers for every player this summer including the veteran defensive duo while also revealing they won’t play as regularly in the 2024/25 campaign.
“There is a lot of speculation in Glasgow and I have read a lot of things that you say are totally not true,” Clement said.
“Fake news. But it is part of being in Glasgow. You cannot react to every fake news because then you’ll only be busy with that.
“They are not going to play 60 games in the season to come now and all the speculation around them is the same speculation that you can have around every player. It is the same for us.
“If there is somebody coming with the right amount of money we will see, we will discuss. But you always need to see and then you need to replace somebody and you need enough money to replace them to make it better, otherwise, it is also of no use. It is finding a balance in that way.”
Rangers transfer news finally drops from Ibrox
The club have been preparing for a big summer throughout the transfer window and even before it started, and they’re following through.
So far six players have left the club and six have joined, but there are expected to be several more deals done before the season begins [Four Lads, 11 July], and that means people will leave too.
Clement is trying to make Ibrox an environment where every player has to earn their shirt. Jack Butland is deemed as irreplaceable and that makes sense because of his performances last season.
But in a season where the team generally underperformed, nobody’s spot is safe. It adds competition and value to training for players competing for their place and also lets everyone know that the manager means business.
It’s a new era for Rangers, and it’s been needed for a long time to take the team back to the top of the mountain and shake off the label of a team that are just happy to compete.
In other Rangers news, the club have set their price tag for Jack Butland after a transfer decision was made.
