Jack Butland will surely be sold if Rangers receive a bid of more than £10million for him this summer, according to Andrew Newport.
Writing in the Daily Record (15 July), the journalist had his doubts over Philippe Clement’s comments that every member of the Gers’ squad bar goalkeeper Butland is for sale in the current transfer window.
Newport suggested that despite the Belgian’s clear keenness to keep Butland at Ibrox, a sizeable-enough bid for the 30-year-old shot-stopper would be enough to tempt the club’s board into selling him.
He wrote: “I’m not sure (Clement’s) Butland claim will stick.
“If someone comes calling with offers over £10m the keeper is off.”
Rangers must prevent short-sighted Jack Butland transfer
Clement can hardly be blamed for highlighting Butland as the one player he simply must keep hold of this summer given that last season he was the only Gers star who hardly put a foot wrong.
Keeping a league-high 18 clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership alone, Butland often made up for some lacklustre defending ahead of him, with players like Connor Goldson now being tipped for the exit door.
However, such form will, and has, attracted suitors this summer, and if £10million is the starting fee the club’s board will be inclined to accept, that could spell trouble for their harmony with Clement [Four Lads, 19 June].
Such a fee would be huge for the club – it’s rare a Premiership player fetches anything close to that amount – but given Clement wants to see others sold first, there are different ways of earning £10million.
If the Gers squad hasn’t undergone the seismic change the Belgian wants by the start of next season, but Butland is a player he has lost, a campaign that simply must get off to a good start could leave a sour taste in the mouth right from minute one [Chris Jack, 22 May].
In other Rangers news, the club could be set for a £5m+ setback after an official transfer announcement.
