Philippe Clement names Jack Butland exit price as Rangers transfer decision made

Philippe Clement has named how much it would take to make him consider allowing Jack Butland to leave Rangers this summer.

Speaking to Rangers Review (14 July), the Belgian boss was discussing the transfer window and the rumour mill that surrounds the club each day, with a host of key stars linked with moves away from Ibrox.

Butland has been one of those [Rangers Review, 30 April], with a move back to the Premier League mooted, but Clement claims that it would take between £30-40million to replace him.

“You always need to be with two parties,” he said. “Every player falls into that category.

“Only Jack [doesn’t]. If somebody comes with £30million or £40million you can replace him for that money.

“Every player falls into that category. We need money to replace him. If it is a good amount you can replace him and do something else. We will see.”

One of the biggest concerns that Rangers fans have had this summer has been worry about losing their key man between the sticks, such was his performance levels last season.

Butland penned a four-year deal when he signed on a free transfer and took over the shirt from the legendary Allan McGregor, and immediately became a fan favourite.

There had been reports that Butland wanted to leave [DHNet, 11 April] and return to England in order to get back into contention for the national team, but if that’s true it doesn’t seem as though Clement particularly cares.

With such a key position locked down, the signing of Liam Kelly raised some question marks about the potential of Butland moving on but it’s clear now that won’t be allowed to happen.

It means all focus can be on improving the rest of the squad to match his level, and fans don’t have to stress about an offer coming in that may be considered. The club’s stance is clear and if they go back on it now, there would be riots among the fans.
