Ibrox View: Clement hits new stumbling block at Rangers as exit-linked man handed injury blow

The season may not even be properly underway, but Rangers’ injury curse has already struck during the early stages of pre-season.

While Mohamed Diomande managed to avoid any issues following a heavy tackle in the Light Blues stalemate with Standard Liege, his teammate and fellow midfielder Nicolas Raskin wasn’t so lucky.

The Belgian midfielder was forced off during the first half of the Gers’ clash with Ajax and was later spotted leaving the ground in a protective boot with Philippe Clement suggesting he injured his ankle [Chris Jack, 13 July].

Although the extent of the injury hasn’t yet been revealed, most have assumed it must be reasonably severe for Raskin to have departed the ground in the boot and that could have ramifications for the transfer window.

The Light Blues know that they need to sell players before they can buy this summer and while Raskin isn’t one of those often linked with an exit, he is of an age where he holds some sort of value in the market.

On top of that, several pundits including Andy Halliday have tipped Clement to get rid of the Belgian having used him sparingly throughout his first season in charge at Ibrox [Open Goal, 16 April, 36:00].

Clement may have been eager to move the 23-year-old on ahead of the new season, but he won’t be able to find a buyer while the midfielder is stuck in a protective boot and unable to feature.

The Light Blues have encountered so many issues when it comes to selling players for transfer fees this summer, whether it be because of a lack of interest or the player’s not wanting to depart Glasgow.

Raskin’s injury is the latest stumbling block in what has been an incredibly difficult summer transfer window for Clement and Rangers’ recruitment team to navigate.

Unless the Belgian makes some sort of miraculous recovery and big bids arrive for his services in the coming weeks, he seems destined to be a Rangers player at least until next January.
