Former Rangers defender Connor Goldson has been labelled “inspirational” after his debut for Aris Limassol.
The 31-year-old made his bow for his new side in a 1-0 win against Omonia 29is Maiou on Friday [30 August], two days before Rangers were beaten 3-0 in the Old Firm derby by Celtic.
Goldson is carrying the example he set at the Gers to Cyprus, with Limassol boss Alexei Spilevski lauding his determination to represent his new side.
Spilevski said, as reported by the Daily Record [2 September, 11:10]: “Connor Goldson is solid and quality. He had an inspirational debut. He is like a machine in the air. He showed his quality in the first game.
“I didn’t want to push him to play because he had an injury and we thought it was better for him to play for us after the international break. But he persuaded me and demanded to play and so I gave in! He was excellent.
Should Rangers have sold Connor Goldson?
Goldson left the Light Blues a little over two months ago [Sky Sports] after six years and 309 appearances for the club. His sale was viewed by Philippe Clement as a necessary sacrifice to fund the summer rebuild.
The decision to move on the Englishman looks like a severe lapse in judgement, even if many disagree. His leadership and presence among the backline were missed at the weekend as Rangers lacked leadership at Celtic Park.
It was a shambolic defensive display by the Gers. There was no defensive coordination to deal with the onslaught of Celtic attacks, and when the players looked to captain James Tavernier for guidance, the right-back cowered behind his teammates.
Clement cannot take all of the slack for the position Rangers find themselves in. The Belgian did his best with the limited budget at his disposal, and it is the financial mismanagement of those who run the football club to blame as it becomes apparent a multi-year project must be set in place to stake a claim to the Scottish Premiership title.
Given the gulf in class between the sides in Glasgow, Goldson will not have helped overturn the deficit for Rangers, but his experience would have come in handy at the back if nothing else.
