Steven Thompson couldn’t believe that Cyriel Dessers didn’t score for Rangers in the 1-0 win against Hibernian.

The Gers struggled to get going in front of a full-capacity Ibrox on Sunday [29 September] with a wonder goal courtesy of Tom Lawrence separating the sides.

Dessers had a golden opportunity to double the advantage late into the second half and his missed opportunity left Thompson dumbfounded live on BBC Sportscene [29 September, 1:49pm].

He said: “Give Bursik a lot of credit, but there’s no way you should miss that opportunity. He’s less than a metre out. It’s a free header, no one on him.

“I can’t believe he’s missed that. Head it down the way, keeper has no chance. Proper sitter.”

Dessers justifies snub with golden miss for Rangers

Rangers supporters will have rightfully been shocked to see Dessers name nowhere to be seen in the starting lineup when the teamsheet was announced before kick-off.

Hamza Igamane was given the nod to lead the attack against Hibernian, and while he failed to find the back of the net at Ibrox, Philippe Clement may be wishing the Moroccan remained on the pitch when Dessers spurned his chance.

The Gers struggled to create many opportunities from open play against a stubborn Hibs defence and had it not been for Lawrence’s brilliance for the all-deciding goal, the players would have felt the wrath of Ibrox at the full-time whistle.

Clement is seemingly entering a pattern of taking two steps forward and one step back, the Belgian got his tactics and team selection completely wrong against Hibs and almost paid the price, particularly with Vaclav Cerny lucky to re-enter the pitch after half-time.

It was far from the ideal welcome to a completely re-opened Ibrox the players would have hoped for but the Gers stayed strong and clinched the three points and in the end, that is all that matters.

Dessers on the other hand is proving time and time again, that he cannot be trusted to be the long-term solution for Rangers, is it too early to be looking ahead to the January transfer window?
